The
Ins and Outs of Audiobooks
What exactly are Audiobooks?
Simply stated just books on tape or the “written word” turned into the
“spoken word”. A spoken word which is recorded on audio book format using
any number of devices (e.g. TTP or “Text to Speech” programs, etc.) then
placed on CDs, cassettes, MP3s or any other reproducer of sound.
Audiobooks can be found just
about everywhere; from your local bookstore to your school library to
specialized web sites such as audible.com, nextup.com, crazyape.com, and many
others. Most of these sites even provide access to free audio books online. You
can go to their “download audio books” section and click on one of several
“free audiobooks” icons which will take you to vast selections of recorded
books and books on tape that can be ordered for free; without paying a dime. But
be careful because “Free Audio Books” doesn’t always really mean free. You
might end up having to download a few audio books, for a fee, after having
received the first couple for free. But
as long as you read the fine print you’ll know what you’re getting yourself
into.
Should I consider using recorded
books? Isn’t reading quicker and more effective; than listening to books on
tape? Well, it all depends on who you are, what you do, and what your intentions
are. Reading can quicker if you plan on sitting down to concentrate at a desk.
But can you read a book and walk the dog at the same time? No. Only Audiobooks
will give you the freedom to do more than one thing at a time yet continue
learning
